What Does Root Canal Treatment Mean?
A common endodontic treatment is known as a root canal – a treatment that involves removing pulpal tissue in your teeth in order to save a decaying or damaged tooth. A root canal is one option that avoids the need for tooth extraction.

You may be a good candidate for root canal surgery if you notice any of the following root canal symptoms: You have experienced tooth trauma (bumped or hit by something) The nerve inside your tooth is infected Your tooth has a large hole or cavity Your tooth has a crack or is fractured

Is a Root Canal Painful?
Our experienced dentists at United Dental Group do everything we can to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed during your procedure. To achieve this, we apply a numbing solution and check in with you during the procedure. Ask one of our staff members about sedation dentistry to learn more about which procedures can be done using this method.
What happens after my root canal is completed? Do I Need a Dental Crown?
There is not sufficient tooth structure to support a filling so the tooth could easily fracture. Also, the seal of a temporary filling is not adequate after two weeks and a conventional filling will also be ineffective in preventing contamination of the tooth over long periods of time. Our dentists will recommend either a core build up or a post and core build up depending on the amount of remaining healthy tooth – this is to hold the crown. After the core or post and core, the tooth is prepared for a crown and approximately two weeks later, your new crown will be ready.
How To Prevent Root Canals
The best way to prevent a root canal is by practicing good oral hygiene and preventive dentistry. Visit United Dental Group for your regular cleanings and to determine the overall health of your teeth. If you suspect a root canal may be needed, speak with one of our skilled professionals to determine the next best step. When an injured or infected tooth is ignored, it could result in needing to extract the tooth and could also cause further damage to the rest of your mouth.
